Through chefs, restaurateurs, and emerging talent, Gault&Millau captures the energy of a rapidly evolving dining culture

For decades, culinary recognition has often flowed through a handful of established global institutions, shaping the way destinations are perceived on the international gastronomic stage. Today, however, the conversation around food is becoming far more diverse, with emerging culinary capitals gaining recognition not simply for replicating established dining cultures, but for developing distinctive identities rooted in local heritage, talent, and innovation.
Saudi Arabia's dining scene has been evolving at remarkable speed over the past several years, moving beyond the arrival of international concepts to reveal a more nuanced story shaped by homegrown chefs, regional ingredients, independent restaurateurs, and a growing confidence in the Kingdom's own culinary voice.
The arrival of the first Gault&Millau Saudi Arabia Guide represents an important milestone within that journey. Unveiled during the inaugural Gault&Millau Saudi Arabia Gala in Riyadh, the prestigious Yellow Guide's first national edition recognizes nearly 250 restaurants across Riyadh, Jeddah, AlUla, Abha, and Dammam, offering one of the most comprehensive assessments yet of the Kingdom's rapidly expanding culinary landscape.
Founded in France in 1969 by journalists Henri Gault and Christian Millau, Gault&Millau has spent more than five decades identifying culinary talent, championing emerging chefs, and documenting gastronomic excellence across the world. Today, the guide operates across twenty countries and evaluates more than 14,000 restaurants through a network of professional inspectors, making its arrival in Saudi Arabia particularly significant for the Kingdom's growing hospitality sector.
What makes this launch especially meaningful is the breadth of the guide itself.
Rather than focusing exclusively on fine dining, the inaugural edition aims to capture the diversity of Saudi Arabia's culinary ecosystem through a curated selection that spans different cities, cuisines, concepts, and price points. Through its reviews, chef profiles, regional highlights, and signature recipes, the guide seeks not only to celebrate established names, but also to uncover hidden gems and elevate emerging talent across the Kingdom.
The timing feels particularly relevant.
Saudi Arabia's culinary landscape is currently undergoing a transformation that mirrors broader cultural shifts taking place throughout the country. As investment in tourism, hospitality, culture, and entertainment continues to accelerate, food has emerged as one of the most compelling expressions of the Kingdom's evolving identity. Restaurants have become spaces where tradition and innovation intersect, where international influences meet regional heritage, and where a new generation of Saudi chefs is helping define what contemporary Saudi gastronomy can become.
The guide also places notable emphasis on the contributions of women across the industry, highlighting the growing influence of female restaurateurs, chefs, and hospitality leaders whose work continues to shape the future of dining in Saudi Arabia.
That commitment to recognizing talent was reflected throughout the evening's awards programme. Among the major honors presented were Chef of the Year, awarded to Wed Saleh; General Manager of the Year, awarded to Sara Katanani; Emerging Chef of the Year, awarded to Elia Kaadi; Young Talent of the Year, awarded to Nihal Felemban; and Pastry Chef of the Year, awarded to Hachem Taleb. A special Inspiring Leadership Award was also presented to Mayada Badr, Chief Executive Officer of the Saudi Culinary Arts Commission, in recognition of her role in advancing the Kingdom's culinary sector and supporting industry development.
The launch is the result of a collaboration between Gault&Millau, the Saudi Culinary Arts Commission under the Ministry of Culture, and Hospitality Services Middle East. Together, the initiative aims not only to recognize excellence, but also to establish new benchmarks, encourage innovation, and strengthen international visibility for Saudi gastronomy.
Importantly, the project extends beyond the printed guide itself. Alongside the annual publication, Gault&Millau Saudi Arabia will operate a dedicated digital platform offering updated restaurant reviews, practical information, and greater visibility for establishments across the Kingdom. The annual gala will also continue as a recurring gathering point for chefs, restaurateurs, hospitality leaders, journalists, and industry stakeholders, creating opportunities for dialogue, collaboration, and continued growth.
Perhaps the most significant aspect of the guide, however, is what it signals about Saudi Arabia's place within the global culinary conversation. For many years, discussions surrounding the Kingdom's dining scene focused largely on future potential. Increasingly, that conversation is shifting toward present reality. Saudi Arabia is no longer simply an emerging market for hospitality. It is becoming a destination capable of generating its own culinary narratives, producing its own talent, and contributing meaningfully to the broader evolution of global gastronomy.
The arrival of Gault&Millau provides recognition for that progress while creating a platform for what comes next. As new cities join future editions and the country's dining landscape continues to evolve, the guide will serve not only as a record of excellence, but as a reflection of a culinary culture finding its voice with growing confidence on the world stage.
