Cartier Brings Colour to an Icon with the New LOVE Colour Collection

More than five decades after its debut, Cartier reimagines the LOVE bracelet through a bold palette

Few pieces of jewellery have achieved the cultural status of Cartier's LOVE bracelet. Introduced in 1969 by Italian designer Aldo Cipullo, the design has transcended fashion cycles, generations, and changing definitions of luxury to become one of the most recognisable pieces of jewellery ever created. Its signature screws, oval silhouette, and symbolic locking mechanism have long represented permanence, commitment, and personal expression. More than half a century later, Cartier continues to evolve that legacy while remaining faithful to its unmistakable identity.

This season, the Maison introduces a vibrant new chapter through the limited-edition LOVE Colour collection, a series of bracelets that bring colour to one of Cartier's most enduring creations. While the original design has traditionally relied on the quiet elegance of yellow, rose, and white gold, the new collection introduces a spectrum of coloured gemstones that transform the familiar silhouette without compromising its iconic character.

The collection reflects a broader shift currently taking place across fine jewellery. For years, luxury jewellery has largely been dominated by diamonds and monochromatic precious metals. Recently, however, coloured gemstones have enjoyed a notable resurgence, driven by a growing desire for individuality, optimism, and self-expression. Cartier's latest interpretation arrives at precisely the right moment, offering a more playful and expressive take on a design historically associated with permanence and restraint.

At the heart of LOVE Colour is a carefully selected palette of gemstones that includes pink sapphires, tsavorites, amethysts, aquamarines, tanzanites, and spessartite garnets. In some versions, the iconic screw motifs themselves are replaced by coloured stones, creating subtle bursts of colour across the bracelet's surface. In others, Cartier takes the concept further, fully pavé-setting the bracelet with vibrant gemstones and replacing the traditional screws with diamonds, creating a striking reinterpretation of the original design.

What makes the collection particularly successful is the restraint with which colour has been introduced. Rather than overwhelming the design, the gemstones act as accents that enhance its existing architecture. The bracelet remains immediately recognisable as LOVE, preserving the clean geometry and industrial elegance that have defined the collection for decades. The addition of colour feels less like a departure and more like a natural evolution.

That balance between continuity and reinvention has always been central to Cartier's success. The Maison understands that true icons are not preserved through repetition alone. They remain relevant because they evolve carefully, adapting to changing tastes while retaining the qualities that made them enduring in the first place.

The launch also follows another significant moment in the evolution of the LOVE collection. Recent years have seen Cartier introduce LOVE Unlimited, a technically ambitious reinterpretation featuring a flexible construction composed of hundreds of miniature components, allowing the bracelet to move more naturally around the wrist while preserving its instantly recognisable appearance. Together, LOVE Unlimited and LOVE Colour demonstrate Cartier's willingness to rethink one of its most important creations through both engineering and aesthetics.

More broadly, the introduction of colour speaks to changing attitudes towards jewellery itself. The LOVE bracelet has long moved beyond its original symbolism as a declaration of romantic commitment. Today, it is just as likely to commemorate personal milestones, achievements, friendships, or acts of self-expression. The addition of vibrant gemstones feels aligned with this evolution, offering wearers an opportunity to personalise an already deeply personal piece.

In an era where luxury increasingly values individuality over uniformity, Cartier's decision to embrace colour feels both timely and intuitive. The result is a collection that honours one of the Maison's most celebrated designs while introducing a fresh sense of energy and optimism.

More than fifty years after its creation, the LOVE bracelet remains one of jewellery's most enduring symbols. With LOVE Colour, Cartier proves that even the most established icons can still surprise us.
